We are saddened and outraged that young people in our community continue to be subject to racist and derogatory verbal assaults. The Center for Asian Americans in Action’s Schools Committee and OC Families in Action stand in solidarity with the students of Portola High School, who were recently harassed and attacked with anti-Black rhetoric and body shaming by students at Laguna Hills High School during a basketball game. We offer our support to all of the families affected by the incidents.

Racism and sexism have shaped Orange County’s history, yet it doesn’t have to be part of our future. We call on community members to be active participants in the efforts to dismantle white supremacy and patriarchy in all of its ugly forms, such as attending an upstander intervention training or sending letters of support to Portola High School. We can and must do more.
